Epididymo-orchitis

Inflammation of the epididymis and the testes.

Inflammation of one or both testes and the epididymis, the sperm storage area behind the testes, by a variety of organisms; often associated with chlamydial infections and gonorrhea. Cold packs to reduce swelling, painkillers Ganalgesics), support for the scrotum, and antibiotics are often used to treat the condition. By contrast, orchitis inflammation of the testes alone is generally caused by the mumps virus.

The inflammation encompasses not only the testes but also a segment of the intricate spermatic duct system.

Epididymo-orchitis is a condition characterized by the sudden inflammation of both the testicle and the epididymis, a twisted tube that extends along the back of the testicle. This disorder causes intense pain and swelling at the back of the testicle, and in severe instances, can lead to the swelling and redness of the scrotum.

The inflammation experienced in epididymo-orchitis is typically triggered by an infection. In many instances, the exact origin of the infection is not easily identifiable. However, at times, it could result from a bacterial urinary tract infection that has travelled to the epididymis through the vas deferens, which is the sperm duct leading to the urethra.

The treatment for epididymo-orchitis usually involves the use of antibiotic medications. If a urinary tract infection is identified as the underlying issue, it’s crucial to investigate and address its root cause.
