Elective

Referring to a chemical substance which tends to combine with one substance rather others.


Referring to surgery or treatment which someone can choose to have butis not urgently necessary to save their life.


An optional course that a student may take, as opposed to the courses in a school’s core curriculum, which all students must take.


A term that refers to treatment which is medically advisable, but not critical. Elective care (such as hospitalization, treatment, or surgery) can be scheduled in advance, in contrast to emergency care, which must be rendered immediately to avoid death or serious disability.


Decided on by the patient and/or the physician, especially with relation to procedures (e.g., surgery) that are not essential.


An elective procedure, often a surgical operation, is characterized by its non-emergency nature and can be planned and carried out at a convenient time. This category includes surgery to rectify non-critical medical conditions like hemorrhoids, as well as certain cosmetic surgeries like rhinoplasty.
