Diabetic cataract

A cataract which develops in people who have diabetes.

Diabetic cataract refers to the formation of opacities in the lens of the eye as a result of diabetes mellitus. In individuals with diabetes, senile cataracts, which are typically slow-growing opacities associated with old age, tend to develop approximately 10 to 15 years earlier than usual. Occasionally, poorly controlled diabetes in young individuals can lead to the development of juvenile cataracts, characterized by diffuse opacities that progress rapidly. The treatment for diabetic cataract is the same as for other forms of cataract and may involve surgical removal of the affected lens followed by the implantation of an artificial lens. Regular eye examinations are important for individuals with diabetes to detect and manage cataracts and maintain overall eye health.
