Co-trimoxazole

A drug used to combat bacteria in the urinary tract.

An antibiotic; a sulfonamide or sulfa drug. Co-trimoxazole, a trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole combination drug (Bactrim, Septra), is used to treat several bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections, ear infections in children, Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, other types of pneumonia, chronic bronchitis, and traveler’s diarrhea.

This drug a mixture of trimethoprim and the sulphonamide sulphamethoxazole is recommended only in the prophylaxis or treatment of pneumocystis pneumonia, and in acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, urinary tract infections and otitis media, where indicated.

Co-trimoxazole, an antimicrobial medication, is a combination of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole. Due to its rare yet potentially severe side effects, co-trimoxazole is now reserved for the treatment of specific infections only when alternative drugs are ineffective. Its primary application lies in the prevention and treatment of pneumocystis pneumonia in individuals with AIDS.
