Corpus cavernosum

A part of the erectile tissue in the penis and clitoris.


Either of a pair of cylindrical blood sinuses that form the erectile tissue of the ‘penis and clitoris. In the penis a third sinus, the corpus spongiosum, encloses the urethra and extends into the glans. All these sinuses have a sponge like structure that allows them to expand when filled with blood.


Any erectile tissue, especially the erectile bodies of the penis, clitoris, male or female urethra, bulb of the vestibule, or nasal conchae.


Within both the clitoris and the penis, there exist a pair of cylindrical entities composed of erectile tissue. These structures, known as the corpus cavernosum, possess a spongy composition that enables them to achieve rigidity upon being engorged with blood.
