Coronary artery

One of the two arteries which supply blood to the heart muscles.

One of a pair of arteries that branch from the aorta and supply the heart. Any malfunction or disease of these arteries (coronary atherosclerosis) can seriously affect the heart (e.g., depriving it of necessary oxygen and nutrients).

One of a pair of arteries that supply blood to the myocardium of the heart. They arise within the right and left aortic sinuses at the base of the aorta. Decreased flow of blood through these arteries induces attacks of angina pectoris.

The heart tissues receive oxygen-rich blood from either of the two primary arteries known as the left and right main coronary arteries. These arteries originate directly from the aorta, the body’s main artery. Additionally, the term “coronary artery” encompasses the branches that extend from the main coronary arteries, such as the left circumflex artery and the left anterior descending artery. When a coronary artery becomes blocked due to atherosclerosis, characterized by the accumulation of fatty deposits within the artery, it can result in a myocardial infarction, commonly referred to as a heart attack.
