Transforming growth factor (TGF)

Any of several proteins secreted by transformed cells that stimulate growth of normal cells, although not causing transformation. TGFalpha or TGF‐A is a 50‐amino acid polypeptide which binds to the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and also stimulates growth of microvascular endothelial cells. TGF‐beta or TGF‐B exists as several subtypes, all of which are found in hematopoietic tissue and promote wound healing.

Polypeptide growth factor that competitively binds to epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptors. This molecule can promote growth of fibroblasts in cell cultures, thus “transforming” normal cells into those with the abnormal properties of malignant cells.
