Community medicine

Variously defined synonymously with community health care, public health, preventive medicine, or primary care.


The study of medical practice which examines groups of people and the health of the community, including housing, pollution and other environmental factors.


The branch of medicine concerned with assessing needs and trends in health and disease of populations as distinct from individuals. Formerly known as social medicine, it includes epidemiology, public health, preventive medicine, health care planning, and evaluation of services.


Medical care designed to provide preventive and clinical services to anyone in need, rather than only to those who are insured or are able to pay for such services.
