Uncontrolled bleeding from vessels within the eye’s retina.
Bleeding from small blood vessels in the surface of the retina. Retinal hemorrhage is usually caused by extremely violent force to the eye; it is a common sign of shaken baby syndrome, a type of severe child abuse. The condition can also result from falls from at least 50 feet, serious motor vehicle accidents, certain abnormalities of the nervous system and blood vessels, infection, high- altitude mountaineering and, rarely, as a complication of normal childbirth and general anesthesia.
