Readiness

In psychology the developmental level at which a child is able to develop a particular skill.

Possession of the skills and maturity necessary to learn new skills; sometimes used in the general sense of being ready for education of any sort but often used in relation to young children and reading. A child’s readiness for reading is important, because if the child is not ready, he or she will quickly fall behind the rest of the class academically, since so much other learning depends on the ability to read. As a result, educators use various reading readiness tests to help them assess whether or not a child is ready to learn to read, in addition to other readiness tests relating to other kinds of skills.
