Pneumonectomy

The surgical removal of a lung.

The surgical removal of a lung, performed as a treatment for lung cancer or when a lung has irreparable damage from severe trauma. Because pneumonectomy reduces breathing capacity by half, surgeons often attempt to perform more localized surgeries, such as lobectomy (removal of a lobe of the lung), depending on the location and extent of the cancer.


The operation of removing an entire lung in such diseases as bronchiectasis, tuberculosis, and cancer of the lung.
