General adaptation syndrome (GAS)

The body’s reaction to stress. The syndrome consists of (a) the alarm reaction, (b) the stage of resistance, and (c) the stage of exhaustion.


General Adaptation Syndrome was described by Hans Selye and is today known as the Stress Response. It is the body’s reaction or adaptation to stress and includes three stages: the fight-or-flight response, the stage of resistance, and the stage of exhaustion.


A series of body changes that result from stress. The syndrome occurs in three stages: alarm, resistance, and exhaustion.


Series of physiological changes that occur when a stressor is encountered; the GAS is conceived of as having three phases: alarm, resistance, and exhaustion.
