Federal trade commission

A federal agency that has authority to prevent the dissemination of false or misleading advertising of foods, cosmetics, and other health products.


A branch of the US Department of Commerce assigned the task of protecting the public against unfair methods of competition in interstate commerce.


A federal agency which has jurisdiction over unfair and deceptive trade practices. Some such practices may violate the federal antitrust laws. The FTC was created in 1914 by the Federal Trade Commission Act (15 U.S.C. sec. 45 (1982)).
