Family practice

A specialty of medical practice that is concerned with the overall health of a person or his or her family.


The specialty of medicine which deals with providing, supervising, and coordinating the continuing general medical care of patients of all ages, primarily in family groups. The care provided is primary care. One of the medical specialties for which residency programs have been approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).


Comprehensive medical care with particular emphasis on the family unit, in which the physician’s continuing responsibility for health care is not limited by the patient’s age or sex or by a particular organ system or disease entity.
