Counterstain

A background stain applied to stained material to increase contrast.


A stain used to identify tissue samples, e.g. red dye used to identify Gram-negative bacteria after having first stained them with violet dye.


A second stain applied over a first for greater staining effect.


A pigment used to highlight or add contrast to parts of a tissue specimen that have already been colored with a primary stain.
