Controlled substance

A drug or chemical regulated under the federal Controlled Substances Act of 1970. Its manufacture, distribution, and sale are subject to federal controls. The major criterion for controlling a substance is its potential for abuse and dependence liability.


A substance regulated by U.S. federal law to prevent abuse. Controlled substances are divided into five schedules, based on their medicinal value, harmfulness, and potential for abuse or addiction.


A substance whose manufacture, possession, or sale is controlled by law.
