Concordance

The probability that two people, e.g., identical twins, who stand in a particular family relationship, will both have the same disorder.

A state in which two or more things are in the correct or expected relationship to each other. For example, the atrioventricular concordance is the relationship between the atria and the ventricles in the heart.

The fact of two related people sharing the same genetic characteristic.

An agreement between a professional and a patient on a course of treatment, especially related to use of medicines.

The chance that an identical disease will occur in related family members. This is particularly important in studies of the occurrence of a disease in identical twins. In type 1 diabetes mellitus for example, studies of identical twins have reported a concordance of 30%-60%. This means that if one twin develops type 1 diabetes, the other has a 30%-60% chance of developing diabetes as well.

Similarity of any physical characteristic that is found in both of a pair of twins.

In twins, the equal representation of a genetic trait in each.
