Teacher licensure.
The process by which a governmental or nongovernmental agency or association evaluates and recognizes an individual, institution or educational program as meeting predetermined standards. One so recognized is said to be certified. Essentially synonymous with accreditation, except that certification is usually applied to individuals and accreditation to institutions. Certification programs are generally nongovernmental and do not exclude the uncertified from practice as do licensure programs. In the FSRO and other regulatory programs, certification of service means that their provision has been approved and payment for them is assured.
The issuance of a “certificate” which gives evidence that its recipient (an individual, facility, or device) meets certain standards against which testing has been done by the certifying body. A certificate thus issued is a credential, and the recipient is said to be certified.
A legal document prepared by an official body that indicates a person or institution has met certain standards, or that a person has completed a prescribed course of instruction or training.
An antiquated term used to describe the process of involuntarily detaining an individual for mental health treatment.
