Burkitt’s lymphoma

A form of cancer that is found chiefly among Africans and is associated with the presence of a particular viral infection.

Malignancy of the lymphatic system, seen mostly in central Africa, characterized by lesions of the jaw or abdomen (esp. in children) often followed by central nervous system involvement. The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is believed to be the cause; chemotherapy is usually effective treatment.

A cancerous illness that may affect the ovaries, abdominal lymph nodes, or bones of the face.

A rapidly growing, B-cell, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. It is rare in the U.S. but common in equatorial Africa, where it often afflicts children aged 5 to 10 years. There is a strong association of this malignancy with Epstein-Barr virus.
