Laparoscopy

The use of a special endoscope that is passed through the abdominal wall in order to view the abdominal organs.

A surgical procedure to examine the abdomen using an endoscope called a laparoscope.

Laparoscopic sterilization.

A procedure in which a laparoscope is used to examine the inside of the abdominal cavity.

A surgical procedure in which a physician passes a flexible tube through an incision in the patient’s abdomen and then uses a small periscope-like device, called a laparoscope or peritoneoscope, to view the internal organs. Because of the small size and placement of the incision, the procedure is sometimes called popularly nicknamed ‘Band-Aid surgery or belly-button surgery. Used in a wide range of medical situations, laparoscopy is an important tool in identifying causes of infertility in women, such as tubal blockage, pelvic inflammatory disease, or endometriosis, or other reproductive problems, such as ectopic pregnancy. Laparoscopy is also employed in some treatments of infertility, such as IN vitro fertilization and gift; in some female sterilization methods, notably tubal ligation; and in examining a fetus in the womb, a procedure called fetoscopy.

Examination of the abdominal cavity, especially the ovaries and Fallopian tubes, through a laparoscope (a type of endoscope) introduced through a small incision in the abdominal wall; also used in women as a sterilization procedure in which the fallopian tubes are ligated.

A procedure that employs an instrument called a laparoscope to look inside the abdomen to detect a number of possible abnormal conditions of the pelvic organs and their cause(s) such as inflammation, cysts, ectopic pregnancy, an abscess, adhesions, or pelvic pain. The laparoscope is inserted via a small abdominal incision, after local or general anesthesia has been administered.

A diagnostic and surgical procedure performed under general anesthesia in which the abdomen is examined and sometimes treated, using a laparoscope, a fiberoptic viewing tube that transmits images to the surgeon on a screen. The laparoscope also enables a surgeon to perform various surgical functions.

Examination of the abdominal structures (which are contained within the peritoneum) by means of an illuminated tubular instrument (laparoscope) passed through a small incision in the wall of the abdomen. Laparoscopy is often used for examining the ovaries and fallopian tubes as well as for performing one method of sterilization.

Also called peritoneoscopy, this is a technique using an instrument called an endoscope for viewing the contents of the abdomen. The instrument is inserted via an incision just below the umbilicus, and carbon dioxide gas is then pumped into the peritoneal (abdominal) cavity. Visual inspection may help in the diagnosis of cancer, appendicitis, salpingitis, and abnormalities of the liver, gall-bladder, ovaries or gastrointestinal tract. A biopsy can be taken of tissue suspected of being abnormal, and operations such as removal of the gallbladder or appendix may be carried out.

Surgical procedure performed under general anaesthetic in which a viewing tube (a laparoscope) is inserted below the navel.

In the realm of surgical and diagnostic procedures, a minimally-invasive approach involves the utilization of a flexible endoscope, commonly known as a laparoscope. This remarkable instrument allows healthcare professionals to visualize and perform operations on various structures within the abdomen. By employing this flexible endoscope, medical experts can navigate and manipulate internal anatomical elements with precision, promoting enhanced patient outcomes and facilitating a speedier recovery process.

Laparoscopy is a medical procedure involving the examination of the abdominal interior using a specialized viewing instrument known as a laparoscope, which falls under the category of endoscopes. This technique is utilized to explore potential sources of abdominal discomfort, like appendicitis. Moreover, it finds application in gynecology for diagnosing disorders and investigating infertility. Beyond diagnosis, laparoscopy serves as a means to conduct minimally invasive surgical procedures, including appendicectomy, cholecystectomy, and female sterilization.

A diagnostic method where a small cut is made in the abdominal wall to insert a laparoscope (a lighted instrument) allowing the surgeon to view the inside of the abdomen and its organs.
