Black Cohosh

Woodland native of North America. Valued by Indians for rheumatism, kidney troubles and menstruation disorders; Indian midwives used it to relieve the pains of childbirth. Black Cohosh also known as Cimicifuga racemosa.

An herbal remedy used for premenstrual discomfort and menopausal disorders. Black cohosh is derived from the root of the cohosh plant, which is also known as black snake root, bugbane, bugwort, rattle root, richweed, and squaw root. It has an effect similar to that of the female hormone estrogen and was widely used by early American colonists and native Americans for the relief of menstrual cramps and for rattlesnake bites.

A perennial herb whose rootstock preparations are promoted as a treatment for menstrual and menopausal discomforts. Black cohosh is also known as black snakeroot and bugbane.
