Boat-shaped.
One of the carpal bones in the wrist.
A bone in the wrist shaped like a peanut that acts as a block to prevent the wrist from bending too far. The scaphoid is vulnerable to injury from falls and collisions, particularly among athletes such as gymnasts, skaters, and football players who are likely to fall on outstretched wrists.
The scaphoid is among the eight wrist bones. Positioned in the row of wrist bones closest to the elbow, it is the outermost bone on the thumb side of the hand.
A scaphoid fracture is a prevalent wrist injury often resulting from a fall onto an outstretched hand. A distinctive indication is tenderness in the anatomical snuffbox (the area between the tendons at the base of the thumb on the back of the hand). Treatment involves immobilizing the wrist using a cast.
