An inflammation and infection of the hair follicles that is usually caused by bacteria. Folliculitis may be a mild and superficial condition, or it may be more severe and involve deeper infection of the skin, particularly in bearded areas where the hair follicles are numerous and deep in the skin.

Inflammation of hair follicles in the skin, commonly caused by infection.

Folliculitis is the inflammation of one or more hair follicles resulting from a staphylococcal infection. It can occur anywhere on the skin, but it commonly affects the neck, armpits, thighs, or buttocks, leading to the formation of boils. It may also affect the bearded area of the face, causing pustules (known as sycosis barbae). Antibiotic drugs are used to treat folliculitis. Since the infection can easily spread, maintaining careful hygiene is essential, and the affected individual should wash any clothes worn close to the skin daily in boiling water until the condition clears up.
