Parathyroid hormone

The hormone secreted by the parathyroid glands in response to a fall in plasma calcium; it acts on the kidney to increase the formation of the active metabolite of vitamin D (calcitriol).


Hormone synthesized and released into the bloodstream by the parathyroid glands. It regulates calcium and phosphorus distribution in the body and functions in muscle contraction and blood clotting. PTH increases the concentration of calcium in the blood in three ways. It enhances release of calcium from the bones, reabsorption of calcium from renal tubules, and absorption of calcium in the intestine. PTH also decreases the concentration of phosphate in the blood, primarily by reducing reabsorption in the proximal tubules of the kidney. Also called parathormone.

Parathyroid hormone increases calcium in the blood when levels are too low by releasing calcium from the bones and decreasing calcium excretion from the kidneys. When blood calcium levels are elevated, the parathyroid gland is signaled to stop producing parathyroid hormone to reduce and normalize the amount of calcium in the blood. Parathyroid hormone also stimulates the kidney’s production of vitamin D, which helps increase intestinal absorption of calcium.

A high level of the hormone causes transfer of calcium from the bones to the blood; a deficiency lowers blood calcium levels, causing tetany. This condition may be treated by injections of the hormone.


A hormone secreted by the parathyroid glands that regulates blood levels of calcium and phosphorus. Its deficiency results in hypoparathyroidism and hypocalcemia; in excess, it causes hyperparathyroidism and hypercalcemia.
