Dietary reference intakes (DRI)

US term for dietary reference values. In addition to average requirement and RDA, include tolerable upper levels (UL) of intake from supplements.

Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) are established by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences. There are four components to the DRIs, which include Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs), Estimated Average Requirements (EARs), Adquate Intake values (AIs), and Tolerable Upper Intake Levels (ULs). Each of these values are described in detail within their corresponding entry.

Current standards for the components of a healthy diet in the United States and Canada. The National Academies of Science released new dietary reference intakes (DRIs) in 1997 to update food allowances originally set in 1941. DRIs reflect the shift in health concerns that has taken place since then. In the 1940s, the emphasis was on the prevention of nutrient deficiencies. The current focus is on the benefits of healthful eating, such as decreasing the risk of chronic diseases including osteoporosis, heart disease, and hypertension.

In the U.S., federally recommended dietary allowances, adequate intakes, tolerable upper intake levels, and estimated average requirements for essential nutrients and other food components in the diet.
