An anticonvulsant medication used in neurology in the treatment of complex partial seizures and in psychiatry as a mood stabilizer to treat bipolar disorder. Marketed under the brand names depakene and stavzor.
Anticonvulsant used to prevent some types of seizures. Adverse effects include gastrointestinal disturbances, hair loss, headache, liver damage, and decreased blood-clotting ability.
An anticonvulsant. Valproic acid (Depakene) is used either alone or with other anticonvulsants to control various types of seizure disorders, including epilepsy. A related drug called divalproex (Depakote) is used as an anticonvulsant, in migraine prevention, and as an antimania drug. Divalproex is metabolized to valproic acid in the body. The precise way in which these drugs work is not fully understood.
