Tau protein

A protein, first identified in the 1970s, found in neurons, primarily in the central nervous system (CNS). Several different versions of tau protein can be found in the body, and all are critical to the healthy functioning of the CNS.

In the realm of neuroscience, there exists a significant protein responsible for upholding the internal framework of nerve cells. This remarkable protein is known as tau protein. However, in the context of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the tau protein undergoes detrimental changes and becomes impaired, leading to the formation of neurofibrillary tangles. These tangles pose a significant obstacle to the normal functioning of the affected nerve cells.
