A rare genetic disorder characterized by excessive physical growth during the first 2 to 3 years of life. The disorder may be accompanied by mild intellectual disability; delayed motor, cognitive, and social development; hypotonia; and speech impairments. Children with sotos syndrome tend to be large at birth and are often taller and heavier, and have larger heads, than is normal for their age. Also known as cerebral gigantism.
Sotos syndrome is characterized by prenatal onset of excessive size that persists through at least the first 4 years of life with macrocrania, a high forehead (dolichocephalic), hypertelorism, prominent jaw, premature eruption of teeth, and a narrow palate with prominent, lateral palatine ridges.
A rare developmental disorder in which cerebral gigantism is associated with scoliosis. Affected children often have behavioral and psychiatric problems, mental retardation, and seizures.
