Shenjing shuairuo, or neurasthenia, is a culture-bound syndrome found predominately in China, and other East Asian cultures, such as Hong Kong and Korea. In many cases, this syndrome meets the criteria for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-Fourth Edition (DMS-IV) mood or anxiety disorder and is commonly referred to as “weakness of nerves” (American Psychiatric Association, 1994,). This disorder is also included in the Chinese Classification of Mental Disorders.
