The set of problems that arise when individuals discover visible signs that they are aging and become preoccupied with the realization.
The period of emotional upheaval noted among some midlife persons as they struggle with the finality of death and the nature of their past and future accomplishments.
An intense, temporary pattern of disturbing feelings, usually anxiety and depression, that accompany the transition from early adulthood into middle age, particularly during the early 40s. The crisis consists of an emotional struggle within the self and with the external world about the meaning, purpose, and direction of the person’s life. Individuals going through a midlife crisis question every aspect of their lives; often engage in self-recrimination over their choice of spouse, profession, or occupation; and may initiate major changes in relationships or work, such as a career change or a new partner. The midlife crisis is a developmental stage, not evidence of a psychiatric disorder. However, if the crisis remains unresolved, it can lead to disturbing emotional patterns that may require treatment.
