Magical thinking

A conviction that thinking equates with doing. Occurs in dreams in children and in patients under a variety of conditions. Characterized by lack of realistic relationship between cause and effect.


A delusional thought process characteristic of schizophrenia in which the individual believes that his or her actions will have a profound impact on the course of events defying the laws of cause and effect.


The idea or belief that one’s thoughts or feelings influence people or the environment around them and trigger events. Such thinking is common in children under age five and may also occur among some uneducated adults or among people with some kinds of mental disorders.


The belief that one’s thoughts or actions have the ability to cause actions or effects that defy the normal laws of cause and effect.
