Indoles

A group of biogenic compounds that include indoleamines.

Aromatic, organic compound.

A type of chemical structure. The neurotransmitter serotonin and the hallucinogen LSD both contain an indole nucleus.

Compound (C6H4 CH: CH.NH) derived from decomposition of tryptophan intestinally. Present also in cultures of some Gram-negative bacteria, in which its absence or presence is a primary identification test.

A derivative of the amino acid tryptophan, excreted in the urine and feces. Abnonr.al patterns of urinary indole excretion are found in some mentally retarded patients.

A substance found in feces. It is the product of bacterial decomposition of tryptophan and is partially responsible for the odor of feces. In intestinal obstruction it is absorbed and eliminated in the urine in the form of indican.

Indole is a compound generated through the breakdown of the amino acid tryptophan in the intestine. This substance is expelled from the body through urine. One particular indole compound, known as 5-hydroxyindole acetic acid, is measured in urine when investigating potential carcinoid tumors.

One of two compounds, the other being skatole, responsible for the odor and color of feces.
