Monitoring of concentrations in the blood may be of help in finding the most effective dose. Carbamazepine has generally fewer side-effects than other antiepileptic drugs; even so, it should be started at a low dose and increased incrementally. The drug is also used to treat trigeminal neuralgia and other types of nerve pain, as well as pain from a phantom limb. lithium-resistant depression may also benefit from carbamazepine.

Carbamazepine, an anticonvulsant medication, shares a chemical relationship with tricyclic antidepressants. It is administered orally or in the form of suppositories and is utilized to decrease the frequency of seizures triggered by abnormal nerve signals in the brain. Primarily, carbamazepine is prescribed for the long-term management of epilepsy. Moreover, the drug is employed to alleviate neuralgia, which refers to intermittent and intense pain caused by nerve damage or irritation. Additionally, it serves as a mood-stabilizing agent in the treatment of psychiatric disorders like mania.
