A premonitory, subjective brief sensation (e.g., a flash of light) that warns of an impending headache or convulsion. The nature of the sensation depends on the brain area in which the attack begins. Seen in migraine and epilepsy.
A sensation or phenomenon that signals the onset of an epileptic seizure or a migraine.
A distinctive and often subtle sensory stimulation associated with some epileptic seizures.
In epilepsy, one or more unusual sensations that sometimes precede and provide warning of a seizure.
Aurae, sensation (e.g., flickering light, halos, or warmth) that may signal the start of a migraine or an epileptic seizure.
An unusual sensation that is often a warning of an impending migraine headache or a seizure, a sudden episode of uncontrolled electrical activity in the brain, causing a series of involuntary muscle transactions or a temporary lapse in consciousness. An aura may consist of a strange feeling, abnormal perceptions, or visual disturbances such as seeing stars or flashes.
The forewarning of an attack. The true epileptic aura may be felt as a breeze or coldness passing over the body. The migrainous aura usually affects the patient’s eyesight with brilliant flickering lights or blurring of vision.
The peculiar feeling experienced by persons who are subject to epileptic seizures just before the onset of an attack. It may be a sensation of a cold breeze, a peculiar smell, a vision of some animal or person, or an undefinable sense of disgust. An aura gives warning that a fit is coming, and may enable a place of safety or seclusion to be reached. It may also occur as a precursor to a migraine headache.
A subjective but recognizable sensation that precedes and signals the onset of a convulsion or migraine headache. In epilepsy the aura may precede the attack by several hours or only a few seconds. An epileptic aura may be psychic, or it may be sensory with olfactory, visual, auditory, or taste hallucinations. In migraine the aura immediately precedes the attack and consists of ocular sensory phenomena.
A personal perception or motor occurrence that precedes and serves as a precursor to the initiation of a neurological event, such as a migraine headache or an epileptic seizure.
