Anomie

Apathy, alienation, and personal distress resulting from the loss of goals previously valued. Durkheim popularized this term when he listed it as a principal reason for suicide.

In psychology, without relationship or the feeling of belonging.

A psychological condition in which a person develops the feeling of not being part of the everyday world, and behaves as though they do not have any supporting social or moral framework.

Feeling of isolation, anxiety, or disorientation from any norms (considered by some as a major cause of suicide).

Social or personal instability or purposelessness caused by a decline in standards and values. From the Greek words meaning “without” and “law”.

A term coined by the French sociologist Emile Durkheim (1858- 1917) to indicate a condition similar to alienation. The individual feels there has been a disintegration of his or her norms and values. Durkheim felt such individuals were prone to take their lives because of the anxiety, isolation, and alienation that they experience.
