Alienation

The estrangement felt in a cultural setting one views as foreign, unpredictable, or unacceptable. For example, in depersonalization phenomena, feelings of unreality or strangeness produce a sense of alienation from one’s self or environment. In obsessions, where there is fear of one’s emotions, avoidance of situations that arouse emotions, and continuing effort to keep feelings out of awareness, there is alienation of affect.

The condition of being uninvolved in, or estranged from others or society in general.

A psychological condition in which a person develops the feeling of not being part of the everyday world, and as a result often becomes hostile to other people.

The experience that one’s thoughts are under the control of somebody else, or that other people participate in one’s thinking. It is a symptom of schizophrenia.

Isolation, estrangement, or dissociation, especially from society.

Experiencing a sense of unfamiliarity, even in the presence of familiar individuals or surroundings, and struggling to establish a sense of connection with family, culture, or peers characterizes the phenomenon of alienation. This feeling is frequently observed among adolescents and can also manifest in individuals who face isolation due to cultural or language disparities. In some cases, alienation may serve as an early indication of schizophrenia or a personality disorder.
