Within the bloodstream, fat-soluble vitamins must be transported as complexes bound to lipoproteins or specific transport proteins. Fat-soluble vitamins can be stored within lipid-rich tissues, such as adipose and the liver. Clinical deficiency of any of the fat-soluble vitamins is likely to impair athletic performance; however, research supporting a benefit for their supplementation to improve performance is scant at best.
