Cardiorespiratory fitness

The body’s physical capacity to perform large muscle movement over a prolonged period of time.


The ability to deliver and use oxygen under the demands of intensive, prolonged exercise or work.


Fitness of the heart and blood vessels and lungs. Generally thought to be best promoted by aerobic exercise.


The capacity of the heart and lungs to function during physical activity. Cardiorespiratory fitness is measured using equipment that records a person’s heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration. The testing is called pulmonary exercise testing, incremental exercise testing, cardiac stress testing, or (more informally) exercise stress testing.


Ability of the lungs, heart, and blood vessels to deliver adequate amounts of oxygen to the cells to meet the demands of prolonged (aerobic) physical activity.


Also known as aerobic fitness; refers to the ability of the body’s heart, blood vessels, and lungs to supply oxygen-rich blood to the muscles during sustained physical activity.
