Bones of the lower limb

The upper portion of the leg features the femur, or thigh bone, which fits into the pelvis at its top end and helps form the knee joint at its lower end. In front of the knee joint is the patella, commonly known as the kneecap. Below the knee are the tibia, or shinbone, and the fibula, often referred to as the calf bone. These bones connect to the tarsus, a collection of seven short bones that include the talus (ankle bone), calcaneum (heel bone), navicular bone, three cuneiform bones, and the cuboid bone. These tarsal bones link to the five metatarsal bones, which then connect to the phalanges, or toe bones.
