An uncommon set of inherited childhood disorders wherein the protective myelin sheaths surrounding numerous nerves, especially in the brain and spinal cord, deteriorate. These leukodystrophies lead to profoundly debilitating conditions including speech impairment, blindness, deafness, paralysis, and invariably result in fatality.
