Insect stings, like those from bees and wasps, can lead to reactions. The venom these insects inject contains substances that induce inflammation, resulting in local pain, redness, and swelling that can last for approximately 48 hours.
A sting inside the mouth or throat can be life-threatening due to the potential for swelling to block the airway. Some individuals might have a severe allergic reaction to insect venom, which could result in anaphylactic shock. For these people, a treatment called hyposensitization is often suggested.
Should signs of anaphylactic shock appear, immediate emergency medical care is crucial. Those who are aware of their severe sensitivity to bee or wasp venom should always have and carry a kit for self-administering adrenaline (epinephrine).
