Surgical hypothermia

The intentional lowering of body temperature is a technique used to extend the duration that vital organs can safely go without their usual blood supply during open-heart surgery. Lower temperatures slow down the metabolic rate in tissues, thereby enhancing their ability to withstand an absence of oxygen. This cooling effect can be accomplished by consistently administering cold saline, around 4°C, into the open chest cavity.
