Diabetic arthropathy

Diabetes mellitus can lead to joint damage, which arises from the loss of protective pain sensation that can occur when peripheral nerves are damaged. This condition frequently affects the joints in the legs, with the ankle being particularly susceptible. The diminished ability to perceive pain increases the risk of injury and can result in joint deterioration over time. Proper foot care and regular monitoring are crucial for individuals with diabetes to help prevent and detect potential joint-related complications.

Joints affected by diabetes-related nerve damage, known as neuropathic joints or Charcot’s joints, often exhibit swelling and deformity. Remarkably, these joints are typically painless. The treatment approach for such conditions involves the application of a specialized cast to reduce swelling in the affected limb. Additionally, supportive footwear is recommended to provide stability and alleviate pressure on the affected joints. Managing and caring for neuropathic joints are essential to prevent further damage and maintain overall foot health for individuals with diabetes.
