A central nervous system stimulant is occasionally employed for the treatment of narcolepsy, a sleep disorder. It is also utilized in children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who have not shown a positive response to treatment with methylphenidate.
Due to its stimulant properties, dexamphetamine has unfortunately become subject to drug abuse. Excessive usage of this substance can lead to anxiety and drug-induced psychosis. Prolonged use results in the development of physical tolerance, whereby the stimulant effects of the drug diminish, necessitating higher doses to achieve the desired impact. Additionally, repeated use can lead to drug dependence, wherein there is a physical or psychological reliance on the drug.
