A female germ cell extruded from the ovary at ovulation.
The egg cell produced by a female, one of over a million in each of the two ovaries at birth. Normally, only one ovum is fully matured and released each month, in the process called ovulation. If a sperm (male sex cell) unites with the ovum, fertilization or conception results. Then, if all goes normally, the fertilized egg travels to the uterus, to develop into an embryo.
A female egg cell which, when fertilised by a spermatozoon, begins to develop into an embryo.
Female germ cell produced in the ovary that, on uniting with a spermatozoon in fertilization begins the formation of an embryo. During the menstrual cycle, the ovum matures, forming a Graafian follicle; during ovulation, this follicle (the developed ovum) ruptures through the ovarian surface; if fertilization occurs, the embryo proceeds through the fallopian tube and implants in the uterus. If fertilization does not occur, the follicle is sloughed, along with the uterine lining, during menstruation.
The female reproductive cell also known as an egg found in the ovaries. Typically, after puberty, a woman’s body releases one ovum during each menstrual cycle; this process is called ovulation.
The mature female sex cell. The term is often applied to the secondary oocyte although this is technically incorrect. The final stage of meiosis occurs only when the oocyte has been activated by fertilization.
The single cell derived from the female, out of which a future individual arises, after its union with the spermatozoon derived from the male. It is about 35 micrometres in diameter.
The reproductive cell of the female, encompassing genetic information and contributing to the process of fertilization. It is commonly referred to as the egg.
The ovum, which is the female reproductive cell, consists of a nucleus suspended in cytoplasm (a gel-like substance). It is enveloped by a protective layer called the zona pellucida.
Roughly one million undeveloped ova exist in each ovary from birth, but merely around 200 per ovary reach maturation for eventual release during ovulation. A fertilized ovum progresses into an embryo.
The release of an egg from the ovary.
