Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency

A hereditary condition characterized by the deficiency of an enzyme responsible for safeguarding red blood cells against harmful substances. The disintegration of red blood cells leading to anemia can be triggered by specific medications, as well as episodes of fever or infection. Typically, this condition predominantly affects males, with approximately 10% of black males and a small proportion of individuals from the Mediterranean region being affected.
