Diverticula

A diverticulum of the colon refers to a sac or pouch that forms within the wall of the colon. Typically, these pouches do not exhibit symptoms and remain asymptomatic. However, complications may arise if inflammation occurs, leading to difficulties or discomfort. It is important to note that diverticula is the plural form of diverticulum, denoting the presence of multiple pouches.

Small bags or protrusions extending outwards from the wall of a hollow body organ, like the colon, are known as diverticula. It is believed that these form due to pressure pushing the organ’s lining through weak spots in the wall. When these pouches are present in the intestinal walls, it’s typically indicative of a condition known as diverticular disease.
