These viruses, also referred to as arthropod-borne viruses, persist in the natural world by means of biological transmission between vertebrate hosts and arthropods that feed on blood. Infection takes place when a blood-feeding arthropod, like a mosquito, draws blood from a vertebrate, such as a human, that is already infected.
