Glutathione Peroxidase

An enzyme catalyzing the oxidation of 2 moles of glutathione in the presence of hydrogen peroxide to yield oxidized glutathione and water.

The general name of an enzyme family with peroxidase activity whose main biological role is to protect the organism from oxidative damage.

A group of selenium- containing enzymes that protect tissues from oxidative damage by removing peroxides resulting from free radical action, linked to oxidation of reduced glutathione; part of the body’s antioxidant protection; often used as a biochemical index of selenium status.

Glutathione peroxidase converts the reduced form of glutathione to its oxidized form while reducing hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxides. The elimination of these peroxides is important for preventing damage caused by these highly oxidative species.

An antioxidant enzyme found in many mammalian cells, including red blood cells. Deficiencies of the enzyme have been linked to an increased risk of acute coronary syndrome.
