A revised version of chemistry written in the early 20th century by Annie Besant and Charles Webster Lead beater (1854-1934) under the guidance of the theosophists’ spirit masters. The chemistry revealed in this manner ranged from the structure of atoms and molecules to the chemical properties of materials. It is said that some of the writing was done while Lead beater was sitting on a bench in Finchley Road, London, England. On other occasions, when the material under spiritual research was not on hand, Lead beater had to make astral visits to glass cases in museums where they could be found. It is not clear why the authors felt it necessary to rewrite the subject except insofar as it formed part of a larger exercise. Besant was, at this stage in her life, convinced of the reality and authority of the theosophists’ spirit guides and strongly influenced by Lead beater. It is doubtful whether Lead beater shared Besant’s convictions: He was probably making the most of the status that his role as the conduit to the spirit masters gave him. The masters dictated to Lead beater, he told Besant, and between them they recorded the truths so revealed. In this way, they rewrote texts on geology, the history of the world, the continents of Atlantis and Lemuria, the history of Christianity (in which Christ was born in 105 C.E.), and chemistry. Seen as part of this larger exercise, it is not surprising that this version of chemistry never accepted by professional chemists or outside the small circle of the theosophists and their adherents has not withstood the test of time.
